Chapter Fourteen

HARPER

Tessa is more flustered than I’ve ever seen her when she stomps into work the next day. Her face doesn’t look angry, she’s just not doing anything quietly or carefully. She sets everything down at her desk and rolls across the walkway to mine before she’s even logged in.

“Let’s do another cookie bait date.”

I pull my ear buds out of my ear, unsure if I’ve heard her correctly. “You want me to do what?”

“Another cookie bait date.”

“Weren’t you just cheering me and Blake on yesterday at dinner?”

Tessa rolls her eyes and waves her hand. “That was yesterday. This is today. Has he asked you on a second date yet?”

“Well, no–”

“Called you his girlfriend?”

“No, but–”

“Then he obviously thinks it’s still casual between the two of you, and you are free to date other guys.”

My heart trips a little. Is that what Blake really thinks? That we’re casual? This would definitely be easier if I could talk to him before agreeing to what Tessa wants me to do, but it’s earlier than I usually get to work, and I haven’t seen him yet.

And regardless of what Tessa says, I don’t really want to date anyone else.

“Tess, what’s going on? Why are you all out of sorts this morning?”

She flips her blonde hair behind her shoulder and smiles a smile that’s a little too big and a little too forced. “Nothing’s wrong.”

“Nothing, like you and Theo nothing?”

Her smile falls and a frown creases her forehead. Ooo, touchy subject.

“There is nothing going on between me and Theo. Which is why we,” she gestures between the two of us, “should try another cookie bait. And not with Blake.” I don’t immediately agree. But I also don’t immediately shut her down. Could what she’s saying about Blake be true? I haven’t done a lot of dating in the last couple of years since my disastrous breakup, and Tessa has easily gone on more dates than I have. Hung out with more guys. Had more guy friends. Up until running into Blake, I’ve felt pretty man repellant. I wouldn’t call her an expert of the male persuasion, but she definitely has more experience than me.

“Wouldn’t it be a little weird?” I ask, tapping my tablet stylus on my desk.

“Why would it be weird?”

“Because I’m already interested in Blake.” I lean forward. “Like, really interested. Wouldn’t it be weird if he saw me asking another guy out?”

Tessa rolls her eyes, and I’m a little over her flippant attitude.

“It doesn’t matter if you’re interested if he isn’t.” She looks away from me, like she did in the car last night. I get the feeling she’s not talking about me and Blake. After a few measured breaths, she looks back to me, her face softening. “Do it for me, Harper. You in?”

I press my lips together. “I’m in. But,” I raise my hand to stop her from protesting, “I need to tell Blake.”

“Tell me what?”

I look up to see Blake resting his arm on top of the short cubicle wall.
